Our Campus and Hospital

Classroom Learning

The College of Nursing facilities are located on the main campus of St. Joseph’s Hospital Health Center in Syracuse, NY. Classrooms have wireless internet access and modern equipment, including touch screen displays, high definition monitors, and interactive white board technology.

Meccariello Center for Experiential Learning
The Meccariello Center for Experiential Learning provides students with opportunities to practice in a “real” hospital environment, complete with all of the equipment found in the hospital setting. In addition to the patient rooms, our simulation labs are equipped with the newest high fidelity simulators such as SIM Man 3G, Victoria – our birthing simulator and the Hal series of infant and pediatric patients. The simulation lab provides students with the opportunity to practice their assessments and skills on a variety of patients. The labs are supported by full time faculty and a Simulation/IT personnel during the semester and class times. Students are able to access the lab for practice during regularly scheduled class times and off hours with key access.

Student Center
Construction to convert the entire sixth floor of the College of Nursing (former residence of the Sisters of St. Francis) to a Student Center was completed in March of 2016. The new Student Center provides much needed dedicated testing space, a lounge and dining area, conference room for group meetings equipped with a monitor and whiteboard, and study rooms with whiteboard painted walls for small group meetings or individual study.

The Student Center is that place where students can have a sense of community within the College. This fully renovated space provides students with the opportunity to enjoy their physical surroundings, encourages them to stay engaged and allows them to build lasting relationships with each other.

Library
Our library has seating for 118 students, contains three group study rooms, and a general reading area. Twenty computers are located in the main library with additional located within the computer lab. The library is equipped with wireless connectivity to allow the use of mobile devices. Our print collection consists of nearly 1800 print books on nursing, medical and allied health topics, as well as general interest material. We subscribe to over 1200 print and electronic journals and newsletters, and our interlibrary loan program provides access to countless additional resources. The library is open seven days a week to accommodate student needs. The St. Joseph’s library page provides 24-hour access to over 2000 medical and nursing e-books, numerous bibliographic and full text databases, as well as our electronic journal collection. VPN soft- ware allows users to view the library page from any off-site computer and remotely access most of the library’s databases and electronic materials. Computers & Technology
Located inside the library, the computer lab contains 32 workstations with computer-assisted learning programs, Microsoft Office, and access to the hospital’s integrated electronic health record. Two high speed multifunction printers are available for student printing, copying, and scanning needs.

Residence Hall
The College of Nursing also provides students with a co-ed, newly furnished residence hall for those who wish to live on campus. Housing availability is on first come, first serve basis to those enrolled in our weekday option.

St. Joseph’s Hospital Health Center
Nursing students complete most of their clinical rotations at St. Joseph’s Hospital Health Center, a world-class, 451-bed comprehensive medical care institution that serves residents of 17 counties in Central New York with many outpatient and inpatient programs, satellites and affiliated organizations, St. Joseph’s has evolved into a system of health care services. Students also have clinical experiences at other community agencies, including Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital.

In addition to providing general medical and surgical care, St. Joseph’s offers several specialty services, including hemodialysis, maternity services, a separate birth center, emergency care, intensive care, wound care, dental services, suicide prevention and certified home health care. St. Joseph’s operates several satellite facilities, including two ambulatory surgery centers, family and maternal child/clinics, a dental clinic, psychiatric services center, The Wellness Place, Regional Dialysis Center, neighborhood dialysis centers and a cardiopulmonary rehabilitation center.

St. Joseph’s Nursing Excellence Recognized with Prestigious Magnet Recognition by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s (ANCC) and the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses, Beacon Award “Gold level” for excellence in critical care nursing for the Surgical Intensive Care Unit (2015).
